One of the appealing features of a location-based novel set in natural spaces is that it offers readers a consistent experience while still allowing for seasonal variations. In fact, if two visitors to Gran Canaria were to follow The Fire Demon’s itinerary just six months apart, their Instagram pictures might look quite different.
I was aware of these potential variations even as I was writing the novel, but none concerned me as much as those affecting the Presa de las Niñas reservoir, featured in Chapter 13. Like any inland body of water, I knew the lake’s outline would change with fluctuating water levels, so I definitely took a risk in making the story so reliant on the reservoir being fairly full. It was full when I scouted the location back in 2021, as you can see below:

To my surprise, what I found in the summer of 2024 was completely different. Seriously, where has all the water gone?

This is the result of a drought that’s been ongoing for the past five years. First the dragon’s head disappeared, and now even the dragon’s tail has gone. In fact, the whole place is dry as a bone. The “Dragon Blue” is now green. Fortunately, this water isn’t used for drinking, as Gran Canaria wisely relies on desalination plants for human consumption. However, agricultural use may be at risk in the near future.

Despite the drought, the area is still worth visiting. This is one of the few locations from the novel that cannot be reached by public transport, so I highly recommend cycling there. Take the GC-605 near Ayacata. If you’ve rented a car, you can drive down that road as well. It’s usually quite deserted, but drive slowly and be sure to honk at the many blind turns along the way.
The Presa de las Niñas recreational area is very clean, quiet, and well-equipped. It’s also suitable for families with children. You’ll find picnic tables shaded by pines, as well as water, barbecues, toilets, and disposal facilities for campervans. Be sure to bring your own supplies, as there are no shops in the area.

Of course, don’t forget to bring your favourite book too 😉
